Tech Tuesday Roundup – Barks, batteries, & bad news
This past week was full of political memes, Hollywood hype, and unrelenting Valentine’s Day reminders (ugh), but there were also some big movements in the tech world. Here’s the big stories you may have missed this week:
Artificial intelligence is now known as “human”, kind of. That’s right, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has given consent to consider the artificial intelligence system driving Google’s Self-Driving Car as a driver, as per the US federal law. In a letter written to Google authorities, the government agency stated that from now on it will address the artificial intelligence system as driver, and not the person who is sitting in it.
The days of plugging in your smartphone at lunchtime could soon be over as handsets with a week-long battery life are just two years away. So says British fuel-cell maker Intelligent Energy Holdings. The company, usually associated with hydrogen powered vehicles, has turned its attention to underachieving smartphone battery life and is working on a technology that could mean having to charge a smartphone only once a week.
For whatever reason, if you’re looking to set the date on your iPhone back to 1970 (maybe you miss the 70s?), don’t! It’s been discovered that setting your iOS device system date and time back to January 1st, 1970, would crash your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, effectively bricking it. Users began doing it because of a viral image that spread online which claimed that setting back the clock will unlock a 1970s-themed Apple Easter Egg. The image was created to try and troll iOS users. Apple has acknowledged the problem and is reportedly working on an update that will prevent the bizarre bug from happening. But in the meantime, don’t do it (seriously, don’t).
Want a dog but aren’t responsible enough to get a full-time pooch? Fortunately, there is now a dog dating service called Bark ‘N’ Borrow? The app is kind of like Tinder for dogs. It’s a community of dog lovers who either already have a dog or are looking for canine companionship. You can download the app for free on your iPhone, and you will be well on your way to finding the perfect four-legged date.
Dad life! My boy knocked my ipad off the table but thanks @weFixSA for a quick fix - Now I can watch bowling vids & prep for Boxing Day!
"The Houdt Headphones are one of my favourites. The quality and workmanship that went in to them is rather impressive and more so, the level of service I received from weFix in terms of getting the headphones and having them delivered was exceptional. Makes all the difference!"
"The service was a breeze. All in all, taking the S3 apart, replacing the LCD, putting it back together and testing it took about 25 minutes — ample time to do some window shopping or grab a cup of joe."
